Minority Health

Elementary school fitness teams from parishes around the state will compete in the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports’ Championship Fitness Meet in Alexandria. More than 200,000 students train for the event at the beginning of each school year with preliminary fitness meets beginning in the spring. The top two boys and girls from each parish advance to the championship. Participants perform fitness tests that are included in the President’s Challenge: a 50-yard dash, sit and reach, pull-ups, the shuttle run, curl-ups, standing long jump and the 600-yard run. In the last three years, the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports has seen a significant increase in the physical fitness levels of elementary school children from the 25 parishes that participate in the competition.
