The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals will be offering free or low cost back to school immunizations for qualifying individuals beginning July 21 at parish health units across Region 5.

April 18 - 25 is National Infant Immunization Week, and this year the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) Shots for Tots program is partnering with Louisiana Walmart stores to promote infant immunization. Each Walmart pharmacy will display a banner promoting the importance of getting immunized and include immunization schedules as inserts in all prescriptions filled during the week.

The 22nd Annual Louisiana Shots for Tots State Conference was held November 6-7 in New Orleans. A new consumer access module known as MyIR was unveiled by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospital's (DHH) Office of Public Health's - (OPH) Immunization Program. MyIR provides Louisiana families with access to their personal immunization records and important tool in helping Louisiana residents stay up-to-date with the recommended immunization schedule.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the CDC Foundation have recognized Gina Deris as one of this year’s CDC Childhood Immunization Champions. The award honors immunization advocates who have made immunization successes possible in their communities. Each year, one CDC Immunization Champion from each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia receives the prestigious award.

As part of National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW), the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals is encouraging parents to make sure their children’s immunizations are up to date. National Infant Immunization Week, which is April 20-27, 2013, is an annual nationwide observance to highlight the importance of protecting infants, birth to 24 months of age, from 14 vaccine-preventable diseases and to celebrate the achievements of immunization programs in promoting healthy communities throughout the United States.

The award acknowledges individuals who have made immunization successes possible in their communities. In this inaugural year, Hughes is one of 39 champions around the country being honored for their efforts as immunization advocates.
