The Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports has seen a significant increase in the physical fitness levels of elementary school children in the last three years from twenty-five parishes that participate in the Fitness Meet program. More than 200,000 Students train for the event at the beginning of each school year and preliminary meets start in the spring. The top two boys and girls from each parish must survive competition from their schools and compete against other kids in their parish before they reach the championship.
Strategy: Students perform the identical fitness tests acquired from the President's Challenge. Tests consisted of: 50-yard Dash, Sit and Reach, Pull-ups, the Shuttle Run, Curl-ups (sit-ups), Standing Long Jump, and the 600-Yard Run. Instructions on how to execute each test properly is included in the Elementary Fitness Meet Guidelines packet and distributed to each parish annually. The top scores from two boys and girls qualifies them for the Elementary Championship Fitness Meet held in Baton Rouge. Elementary school children compete against other children from around the state. This year's State Champioinship was held on April 28 at Broadmoor High School in Baton Rouge.
