Approximately 24% of Louisiana's children and youth are identified as having special health care needs (source: National Survey of Children's Health). Spend the day with our technical experts and learn how you can improve your skills in the areas of developmental screening, youth health transitions, and care coordination.

 

What is the Resource Information Workshop?

The Resource Information Workshop (or RIW) is The Resource Information Workshop (or RIW) is an event combining lectures from subject matter experts with a "health fair"-style vendor area composed of public health and community agencies and organizations. It is hosted by the Children's Special Health Services (CSHS) program housed within the Bureau of Family Health at the Louisiana Office of Public Health. Four (4) free Continuing Education credits are offered to Registered Nurses, Social Workers, and Licensed Professional Counselors. The day is focused on the following topics:

  • An overview of developmental screening and surveillance, as well as strategies for practice improvement
  • An overview of regional public health and community services which support comprehensive care for children and youth with special health care needs
  • Strategies to improve or implement care coordination services at the practice level
  • Key elements of youth health transition services and why they are essential to improving health outcomes

 

Who should attend this workshop?

We welcome professionals from all disciplines that serve children and youth with special health care needs. This can include Registered Nurses, Social Workers, physicians and healthcare providers, counselors and mental health professionals, therapists, early interventionists, educators, and public health employees. We also welcome students from these disciplines. 

This activity has been submitted for approval by the LA Department of Health, Office of Public Health, Bureau of Family Health for 4 clinical contact hours of Social Work Continuing Education.  The LA Department of Health, Office of Public Health, Bureau of Family Health is an authorized approval organization of the LA Board of Social Work Examiners.

This activity has been submitted to the LA Counseling Association for approval to award contact hours.  The LA Counseling Association is authorized by the LA Licensed Professional Counselor Board of Examiners.

This continuing nursing education activity has been submitted for approval by the Louisiana State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

 

What can I expect to take away from the workshop?

The participant will be able to apply knowledge of developmental screening, early intervention, care coordination and transition support services to provide quality care to CYSHCN and their families. The participant will also have increased knowledge of regional public health and community services available to them for familes of CYSHCN.

 

Can my organization be a vendor at the RIW?

Any agency or organization from the community or public health sector that serves CYSHCN and their families can vend at this event. You will be provided with a table and chairs to display and distribute your program's materials. We ask that each person from your organization complete their own individual registration and that you limit table workers to two (2). Vendors can also earn CEs but must indicate this on their registration form on Eventbrite. Information on unloading and setup will be emailed at a later date.

 

What's covered in my registration?

Admission to the event is free. Continuing education credits for RNs, LPCs, and Social Workers are also free. All attendees will be provided with a complimentary boxed lunch. Attendees will receive a link to PDF learning materials that they may print and bring if they wish. This link will be sent via email at a later date.
