The Lousiana Mollsucan Shellfish Program classifies molluscan shellfish growing areas for 4 classification periods: March through April, May through August, September through October, and November through February. Each classification period is a result of extensive water quality sampling collected during adverse conditions using criteria recognized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
