The Department of Health and Hospitals’ Office for Addictive Disorders is holding its Fall Conference Wednesday, Nov. 14 through Friday, Nov. 16, 2007. The conference is open to social workers, nurses, physicians and other professionals in the field of addiction.

The conference, themed "Honoring Those We Serve and Those Who Serve Them," will be held in Baton Rouge at the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center.

The purpose of this conference is two-fold: to further the knowledge, skills and experiences of participants working in addictions and related fields; and to honor staff, supporters and clients. The goal of the conference is to develop a workforce that is prepared and committed to providing appropriate and effective addiction prevention and treatment through partnerships and collaborations.

According to Michael Duffy, assistant secretary for Office for Addictive Disorders, "We want this conference to be a learning and networking event, when we can also acknowledge the contributions of all service providers working with addictive disorders. We will also be honoring professionals from out-of-state who provided support and services to citizens of our state during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita."

The keynote speaker William C. Moyers, vice-president of External Affairs for the Hazelden Foundation, is based in Minnesota. For the past decade, he has committed himself to helping people, families and communities understand the power of addiction and the promise and possibility of recovery.
