The Lousiana Mollsucan Shellfish Program classifies molluscan shellfish growing areas for 4 classification periods: May through August, September through October, November through February, and March through April. Each classification period is determined by extensive water quality sampling collected during adverse conditions using criteria recognized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
