Louisiana WIC Breastpump Benefit Program

The Louisiana WIC Program provides breast pumps to mothers needing assistance establishing breast milk, with breastfeeding due to premature and hospitalized infants, other medical or breastfeeding problems, and returning to work or school.

Who is eligible to receive a breast pump?

 In order to receive a breastpump, a woman must first be certified by the WIC program as a breastfeeding participant.

 

Why would a pump be necessary?

  • Establish breast milk
  • Breastfeeding mother returning to work or school
  • Mother’s desire to store milk
  • Separation from baby for an extended amount of time
  • Infants with feeding/attachment difficulties
  • Traveling mother
  • Mother with twins or triplets
  • Engorgement

What Types of Pumps does the Louisiana WIC Program Provide?

Medela Hospital Grade Electric Pump

 

Hospital Grade Pumps are loaned out free of charge to certified WIC moms for the following reasons:  

  • Establish breast milk
  • Infant is hospitalized
  • Premature infant unable to nurse
  • Infant with a severe feeding problem such as cleft lip
  • Mother of twins or triplets
  • All others to be determined by the appropriate WIC staff person

Note: The hospital grade electric breastpump is loaned to the WIC mom for a specific period of time and must be returned to the WIC clinic. Only the disposable pumping kit is non returnable. 

Purely Yours Electric Personal Pump  

 A personal electric breastpump may be given to a certified WIC mom for the following reasons:

  • Establish breast milk
  • The WIC mom is returning to work or school
  • A hospital grade pump is needed but is not available.
  • Mother of twins or triplets
  • All others to be determined by the appropriate WIC staff person

Note: The personal electric breastpump is for the WIC mom to keep and will not be returned to the WIC clinic

 Manual or Hand Pump  

 A manual or hand pump may be given to a certified WIC mom for the following reasons:

  • The WIC mom is experiencing engorgement
  • The WIC mom desires to store milk
  • Separation of the WIC mom and her infant for more than 24 hours
  • All other reasons to be determined by the appropriate WIC Staff person
