Call 911 in an Emergency
Dial 911 in the event of an emergency.
Don't try to drive to the ER.
Emergency rooms are for emergencies. If you are experiencing an emergency, dial 9-1-1 so an ambulance can safely take you to the hospital.
If you are not experiencing an emergency, you can receive care at an urgent care or primary care clinic. The LSU Health Baton Rouge clinics, parish health units, community clinics and FQHCs are great places to receive care - even without insurance.
ER VS. Urgent Care
Examples of when an emergency room is needed are chest pain or squeezing sensation in the chest, seizure or loss of consciousness, severe abdominal pain, sudden paralysis or slurred speech and uncontrolled bleeding.
Examples of when an urgent care clinic is more appropriate include ear or eye infection, allergies, bladder infections, pediatric care, fever, cuts that may need stitches, possible broken bones or simple fractures, severe sore throat, sprains and strains and vomiting/diarrhea.
