The Louisiana Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (LA EHDI) program works to ensure all children who are deaf or hard of hearing can effectively communicate and develop the language skills they need to learn, grown and thrive.
It is important to identify a baby's hearing level as early as possible so families can figure out the best way to communicate with them. Children who are deaf or hard of hearing may need to learn other ways of communicating, such as sign language.
Because hearing screening is the first step in finding out if a child is deaf or hard of hearing, all babies in Louisiana are screened. EHDI follows and promotes the national 1-3-6 national guidelines for hearing screening detection and intervention – hearing screening before 1 month of age, follow-up testing before 3 months of age, and enrollment in early intervention services before 6 months of age. Program staff manage the collection of this data and connect families with support groups and early intervention specialists. Enrollment in early intervention as soon as possible plays an important part in helping children who are deaf or hard of hearing reach their full potential.
The EHDI program has a state-mandated advisory council that includes Deaf representatives, parents of D/deaf children, physicians, and hospital administrators to help guide their efforts.
