Sudden Unexpected Infant Death and Shaken Baby Syndrome

Act 506 of the Louisiana Legislature designates the Louisiana Department of Health as the agency to provide recommended resources related to Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) and Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) prevention for use by healthcare providers and other social service agencies.

SUID is defined as the sudden and unexpected death of an infant less than 1 year of age whose cause of death is not immediately obvious before investigation. Shaken Baby Syndrome is a term used to describe the constellation of signs and symptoms resulting from violent shaking or shaking and impacting of the head of an infant or small child.

Resources for Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID):

  • Give Your Baby Space campaign and website: GiveYourBabySpace.org provides information and resources for caregivers and providers around SUID and safe sleep. The website includes an interactive game that shows users how to set up a safe infant sleep environment, a resource directory, and educational print materials and radio ads directed at parents and caregivers.

Recommended Resources for Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS):

  • National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome: The Center’s website, Dontshake.org, provides information and tools for providers around SBS. The website includes recommended research around SBS, prevention tools, educational materials for purchase, and resources for families who have been affected by SBS.

 

Perinatal, Infant, and Early Childhood Mental Health

In accordance with Act 188 of the 2022 Louisiana Regular Legislative Session, “all hospitals and birthing centers that provide labor and delivery services shall, prior to discharge following pregnancy, provide pregnant women and their family members information about perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, including the symptoms, treatment, and available resources.”
