Early Steps
EarlySteps is Louisiana's Early Intervention System under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Part C. EarlySteps provides services to families with infants and toddlers from birth to three years (36 months).
Eligibility
Children with medical conditions likely to cause disability or developmental delay, or with delays in the following areas, may be eligible:
- Physical development (crawling, walking, seeing, hearing)
- Cognitive development (learning skills or problem solving)
- Social and emotional development (playing with others, showing feelings)
- Adaptive development (feeding, getting dressed)
- Communication (listening, talking, expressing self)

- Audiology
- Health Services (family education, assistance with other EarlySteps services only)
- Medical Services (evaluation only)
- Nutrition Services
- Occupational Therapy Services
- Physical Therapy Services
- Psychological Services
- Service Coordination
- Social Work Services
- Special Instruction
- Speech Language Pathology
- Translation Interpreter Services (foreign language and sign language)
- Transportation (to and from an EarlySteps service only)
- Vision Services
Anyone can make an EarlySteps referral. Children can be referred to EarlySteps by contacting the System Point of Entry (SPOE) in their region. Once the SPOE receives the referral, the family will be contacted to begin the eligibility determination process.
What is a SPOE?
System Point of Entry, otherwise known as SPOE, is an agency that provides the intake services to families and children with disabilities.
