Bureau of Nutrition Services
The USDA's Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, popularly known as WIC, provides foods, nutrition counseling, breastfeeding promotion, breastfeeding support and access to health services to low-income women, infants, and children.
Louisiana WIC currently provides services to nearly 100,000 participants a month throughout 100 clinic sites.
The impacts of WIC have been well documented and include:
- 20 to 33 percent reduction in late fetal death rates
- longer pregnancies leading to fewer premature births and reducing the number of low birth weight infants
- each dollar spent on WIC represents savings in health care costs from $1.77 to $3.13
Participants enrolled in Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP), or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) automatically qualify for Louisiana WIC. Learn more about SNAP and find out if you qualify >>
Louisiana Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), another USDA nutrition program, is designed to supplement the diets of seniors over the age of 60. One of 26 CSFP programs nationwide, Louisiana's CSFP is the third largest.
