Office of Vital Records gets new location

BATON ROUGE - The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Center for Records and Statistics, which houses the Office of Vital Records, will have a new address and phone number effective Monday, Feb. 28, 2011.

The office was forced from its longtime home in downtown New Orleans to relocate to a temporary location in Jefferson Parish after Hurricane Katrina, and is now returning to Orleans Parish.

Vital Records is responsible for the collection, maintenance, issuance and preservation of birth and death certificates for the entire state and marriage certificates for Orleans Parish. Effective Monday, walk-in services will be available at Benson Tower at 1450 Poydras St., Suite 400 in New Orleans. Also, Monday, the Orleans Parish Marriage Office will move from its current location at 1010 Common Street in New Orleans to 1450 Poydras St., Suite 407.

Vital Records services at the Jefferson parish Health Unit in Metairie will not be available after Friday, Feb. 25. Anyone needing vital records services can get them at the Poydras Street location in New Orleans.

The move also requires a change in telephone numbers. As of Monday, the Vital Records Customer Call Center can be reached at 504-593-5100.

There are several walk-in service locations for vital records around the state. Those services can be accessed at the Parish Health Units in the following locations: Caddo, Calcasieu, East Baton Rouge, Marrero, Lafayette, Lafourche, Ouachita, Rapids, Tangipahoa.

Vital Records services are also available online at dhh.la.gov.
