The Department of Health and Hospitals will reopen oyster Harvest Area 11 one half hour prior to sunrise Saturday, March 16, 2013. This oyster bed is located west of the Mississippi River in Plaquemines Parish. DHH closed the bed on February 27, 2013 due to an oil spill.

Testing by DHH has determined molluscan shellfish growing waters in harvest Area 11 are suitable for harvest of oysters. Today, DHH Secretary Bruce D. Greenstein, State Health Officer Dr. Jimmy Guidry and Assiistant Secretary for Public Health J.T. Lane signed the order to reopen Area 11. Today's action rescinds the closure order, allowing oystermen to resume operations in harvest Area 11.

The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals strives to protect and promote health statewide and to ensure access to medical, preventive and rehabilitative services for all state citizens.
