On January 17, 2007 at 10:00 am Lighten Up Louisiana will be kicking off its second fitness competition at Louisiana’s Office of Group Benefits at Bon Carre, 7389 Florida Blvd., Suite 400.

Governor Kathleen Blanco and Miss Louisiana, Jamie Wilson, will be in attendance. Along with keynote speaker, Matt Labauve, honorary teams from the Office of Group Benefits and local Louisiana Schools will also be there to help kick off the event.

A triple transplant survivor, Labauve will discuss his 1990 operation to remove his kidney and pancreas, his recovery and his entry into the world of competition in the World Transplant Games. In 1999 he won a silver medal in the Budapest Games.

Lighten Up Louisiana is a five-month fitness competition presented by the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports that is open to all Louisiana citizens. Contestants can compete as part of a team or as individuals in the areas of weight loss and/or total physical activity. 

The Lighten Up Louisiana Kids division was created to encourage participation from children under the age of 18 can join. This youth division will be a four-month competition in which teams of 10-30 kids, along with an adult captain, will compete in racking up the most combined points in total physical activity. 

The winners will receive mentions on local television, radio, and newspapers and a special recognition party and reception at the Governor’s Mansion.
