The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) is reporting 48 additional cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. None of these new cases have required hospitalization. This brings the total number of Omicron cases in our state to 93.

Monitoring the health status of a population is an essential step in evaluating the effectiveness of various health programs and in developing programmatic policy for the future. Monitoring the status of a population relative to certain health indicators over a number of years is an especially effective tool for health planning. Act 985 of the 1995 Louisiana Regular Legislative Session, enacting R.S. 40:1300.71, requires that the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals annually prepare a report card relative to health and health-related issues.

In response to HR 107 of the 2018 Regular Legislative Session the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) is required to report on increasing the minimum age to purchase tobacco products in this state to twenty-one.

In response to the possibility of elevated risk modeled by NATA, EPA Region 6 and the Louisiana Department of Environmental (LDEQ) conducted preliminary ambient air sampling in March of 2016 to decide if a more extensive and comprehensive monitoring and assessment plan was needed. LDEQ collected instantaneous or “grab” samples and analyzed those samples using LDEQ’s Mobile Air Monitoring Lab (MAML). Additionally, EPA collected a small number of 8-hour and 24-hour canister samples. Both EPA’s and LDEQ’s air monitoring detected chloroprene off-site within and outside of a 1-mile radius of Denka.

The Louisiana Department of Health today released information regarding chloroprene emissions at the Denka Elastomer plant in LaPlace to officials in St. John the Baptist Parish. The assessment was prepared at the request of the Parish Council for the St. John School Board.
