Chemical Terrorism Response Laboratory
The Louisiana OPH Laboratory is part of the Laboratory Response Network for Chemical Threats (LRN-C), a national system established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This network includes the CDC, local and state public health laboratories that work together to respond to chemical terrorism and other public health emergencies. During major national incidents, state and local LRN-C laboratories assist the CDC by testing specimens for chemical exposure and act as key communication links between the CDC, local health officials, hospitals, and poison control centers.
The Louisiana OPH Laboratory plays a crucial role in supporting healthcare facilities by providing guidance and outreach related to chemical threat emergencies. Laboratory testing is a vital component of the response to such events. There are specific requirements for the collection, storage, packaging, and shipment of clinical specimens gathered during a chemical exposure incident.
