About Sanitarian Services

Sanitarian Services is primarily occupied with enforcing laws, rules and regulations for maintaining and promoting community hygiene; however they are increasingly orienting themselves to accomplishing their goals by education, enlightenment, and persuasion. Sanitarians are more concerned with the development of sanitary standards and technical aspects of engineering, construction, and supervision of operators or various facilities and techniques which are basically design entities and which are conducted toward improvement of living conditions in communities.

Back to School: Packing Safe Lunches

It's that time of year again! Across the country, teachers and parents alike are preparing for students to head back into the classroom - and the lunchroom. Although many students purchase meals from the school cafeteria, home-packed are lunches are still very popular. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) offers the following tips to ensure the lunches you pack for your child are safe.

Building and Premises Program

To control environmental factors which are detrimental to the health of persons confined to, residing in, or cared for by, institutional facilities, including prisons, hospitals, and nursing homes, group homes, day care centers, and schools by annual inspections of all institutions (prisons semi-annually).

Commercial Seafood

The Commercial Seafood Program is the regulatory and enforcement agency for all seafood products produced and processed in Louisiana. All products must adhere to quality standards set forth in the Louisiana Sanitary Code and the National Shellfish Sanitation Program (NSSP). The NSSP is the federal/state cooperative program recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) and the Interstate Shellfish Sanitation Conference (ISSC) for the sanitary control of shellfish produced and sold for human consumption. All oyster related facilities must adhere to the NSSP.

Disease Vector Program

Regulates certain aspects of Mosquito Control, Rodent Control and the control of domestic flies and other arthropods of Public Health importance; Reviews and approves any community abatement plans; Enforces general Rodent Control regulations.

Dormitory Food Safety

College shopping and checklists include many items such as laptops, printers, bedding, microwaves and compact refrigerator/freezers. With the hectic schedules that college students have to balance, food safety can fall by the wayside. Unfortunately, this can lead to foodborne illnesses, which cause students to miss class and schoolwork - not to mention pay for medical treatment. Foodborne illness shouldn't get in the way of students' success.

Food and Food-borne Illness Complaints

The Retail Food Program investigates all reported foodborne illness complaints and unsanitary conditions regarding retail food establishments. Suspected foodborne outbreaks are referred to the epidemiology section for further investigation.

Food Safety for Seafood

The Louisiana Administrative Code Title 51 Part XXIII requires the following regarding seafood products at retail food establishments: Seafood-includes but is not limited to fish, shellfish, edible crustaceans, marine and freshwater animal food products.
