Louisiana took a smart and healthy step Monday by launching a website that tells consumers how their favorite restaurants, lounges, markets and seasonal "snocone" stands do on required health inspections.

With the state's new website -- www.EatSafe.la.gov -- users now can see how effectively Louisiana's more than 33,000 licensed food establishments meet health requirements, which run the gamut.

There's a good reason for every one of those requirements and dozens of others, all of which are supposed to be met by the state's 16,859 restaurants, 7,168 grocery stores, 4,929 lounges and bars, 1,084 meat markets, 524 seafood markets and 2,376 day-care facilities and residential food preparation services.

The information posted on the Eat Safe site is sure to empower consumers. Smart business owners will make good use of it, too, to see how their grocery suppliers are doing, for example, as well as their competition. And, if wide access to the results of inspections prompts a business owner to fix something a little faster, that's icing on the cake, which should be stored "in an insect/rodent proof container with a lid."
