The holiday season is supposed to be a joyous time, but a crook can ruin it for you. It's also a time to consider personal safety when out doing holiday shopping. The Lafayette and Acadia Parish Sheriff's Departments are teaming up with the Acadiana Medical Reserve Corps and the Louisiana Department of Health to offer two separate courses to help residents protect themselves this holiday season.

Personal Protection Course: Lafayette Parish sheriff's deputies will address laws and rights in regards to concealed weapons, pepper spray and tasers and provide instruction on situational awareness and demonstrations of basic personal protection techniques. This course is classroom instruction.

Self-Defense Course: Acadia Parish sheriff's deputies will teach self-defense techniques, including simple release, evasion and striking techniques. A focus on situational awareness and training in physical self-defense techniques will provide options to reduce the risk of abuse and attack. This course will provide hands on training.

The goal of the deputies who will teach these courses is to empower you with tools to maintain personal safety and to successfully confront and survive potentially dangerous situations.
