The Bureau of Primary Care and Rural Health will host its annual Rural Health Clinics Workshop on June 5-6, 2018 and the Rural Hospitals Workshop on June 7, 2018 in Lake Charles. These workshops are conducted to provide a national legislative update, information on new or revised policies and procedures at the federal and state levels, and information on current topics that affect healthcare and needs of Louisiana residents. Networking opportunities are also made possible.

A HPSA, or health professional shortage area, is a designation given to an underserved area. This is usually parish-wide but can be used at the census tract level as well. This designation allows incentive programs like National Health Service Corps, State Loan Repayment Program and the Louisiana Conrad State 30 (J-1 visa waiver) Program to be offered to encourage physicians to work in these underserved areas. Some of these designations also offer Medicare bonuses and tax deductions for physicians.

This report presents results from specified years of BRFSS for the state of Louisiana. All civilian, non-institutionalized state residents aged 18 and older with a household landline telephone are eligible for survey participation. Respondents were selected randomly from the sample of eligible individuals.

Act 819 (the Act) of the 2006 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature amended R.S. 37:1306-1310 requires the Department of Health and Hospitals to publish primary service area descriptions and provide annual updates to encourage innovative collaboration between and among rural hospitals and physicians in delivery of health care services in rural areas.
