The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) Office of Public Health (OPH) Region 1 serves the southeast portion of the state in 4 parishes: Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, and St. Bernard.

Our mission is to protect and promote the health and wellness of all individuals and communities in Louisiana. We accomplish this through education, the promotion of healthy lifestyles, preventing disease and injury, enforcing regulations that protect the environment, sharing vital information, and assuring preventive services to individuals and families.

We provide healthcare to both children and adults alike and make it our mission to ensure access to healthcare resources. The public health units (PHUs) serve the underinsured and uninsured. No one is ever turned away for an inability to pay.

The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH), Office of Public Health (OPH) for Region 1 is launching an Instagram reels contest open to high school students in the region. Students who attend high school in Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, and St. Bernard parishes are invited to enter for a chance to win a fall entertainment package including a Bluetooth speaker, wireless headphones and a power bank charger.

Contest participants are asked to create an Instagram reel between 15 and 60 seconds in length on the topic of access to healthy foods. Participants must enter using the registration from below and all reels must be tagged with #AccessMattersOPH1.  Contest runs from September 18 to October 13.

The Access Matters Instagram Reels contests asks students to think about the broad picture of food access for themselves and their community.

  • Is healthy food easily accessible where you live?
  • Does cost of food play a role in what is available to you?
  • Is junk food prevalent, but healthy food harder to seek out?
  • Are there barriers to developing healthy eating habits?
  • How would you try to change the food landscape where you live?

Answer questions like these and more in an Instagram reel for a chance to win Bluetooth speakers, wireless headphones, and power bank chargers. The top three reels will be selected by a committee of Office of Public Health Region 1 staff and awarded prizes.

The contest opens on Monday September 18, and closes on Friday, October 13 at 11:59 pm.

To enter, create a reel that:

  • Addresses the issue of food access and healthy food in your community
  • Uses creative visuals and storytelling to engage your audience
  • Includes the hashtag #AccessMattersOPH1
