November 08, 2021 Families must claim Child Tax Credit by November 15 to receive payments this year

- The American Rescue Plan, signed into law by President Biden on March 11, 2021, increases the Child Tax Credit (CTC) to provide up to $300 per month per child under age 6, and up to $250 per month per child ages 6 to 17.

Most families are automatically receiving monthly payments, but families who haven’t signed up and earn too little to have to file taxes may be missing out. If you are not automatically receiving monthly Child Tax Credit payments, the deadline to sign up is November 15.

Between now and November 15, families can go to GetCTC.org  to sign-up for the Child Tax Credit for families who aren’t required to file taxes. This tool, created by Code for America, in collaboration with the White House and Treasury, is in English and Spanish and is mobile friendly. Most families can complete it within about 15 minutes.

If you are eligible for the Child Tax Credit but don’t sign up for advance monthly payments by the November 15 deadline, you can still claim the full credit of up to $3,600 per child by filing your taxes next year. Click here to learn more about the Child Tax Credit.
