- Updated Number of Deceased Victims Recovered Following Hurricane Katrina

Recovered Bodies – At this time, state officials, working in conjunction with coroners from local parishes, have recovered 1,070 bodies. This is an increase from 1,067 recovered bodies reported on Nov. 1, 2005.

Bodies Recovered From Nursing Homes:
12 – Bethany Nursing Home (New Orleans)

  2– Woldenberg Village/The Azaleas (New Orleans)

19– Lafon Nursing Home (New Orleans)

35– St. Rita’s Nursing Home (St. Bernard)

St. Gabriel Morgue Facility Totals:
877 – Total bodies examined at the morgue

284 – Released to Families

243 – Ready to be released; attempting to locate family members

  12 – Identified; awaiting autopsy

338 – Identity unknown

Released Bodies – Earlier this week, LDH reported 238 bodies had been released to families. Today, that number has been updated to 284 released bodies (see attachment.)
                        268 – Storm-related deaths

  16 – Medical examiner cases not storm-related

Demographic Breakdown of the 268 Storm-Related Deaths:
Race: African-American - 131 bodies (49% of total); Caucasian – 123 bodies (45%); Hispanic – 10 (4%); Native American – 1, unknown – 3 (2% combined.)

Gender: 137 males (51%), 131 females (49%).

Parish of Residence: Jefferson – 20 (7%); Orleans – 201 (75%); St. Bernard – 36 (13%); unknown – 5 (2%); East Baton Rouge – 1, Lafayette – 1, Washington – 1, Plaquemines – 2, out of state – 1 (3% for all combined.)
