BATON ROUGE - Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Secretary Alan Levine announced today that Kathy Kliebert will serve as assistant secretary of the newly-created Office of Behavioral Health and Julia Kenny will serve as assistant secretary of the Office for Citizens with Developmental Disabilities.

Enough volume and rancor went into the national health-care debate to make it sad that we can't harness them to make the nation truly energy independent. But while Republicans and Democrats clubbed each other daffy with public options, back-room deals, death panels and coverage mandates, Louisiana public health officials pushed ahead quietly with their own plans for reforming health care — or at least that portion of the state's health care provided by Medicaid. That portion turns out to be regrettably large.

The secretaries of the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and the Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) sent a letter to Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Assistant Secretary of Labor David Michaels asking the agency to conduct a full investigation of oil spill worker conditions and safety.

BATON ROUGE – Louisiana Department of Health Hospitals Secretary Alan Levine and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu this week submitted a letter and proposal to U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Director Cindy Mann highlighting the importance of Primary Care Access and Stabilization Grant clinics in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard and Plaquemines Parishes and offering funding solutions to keep the clinics open. Federal funding for the clinics currently ends on Sept. 30.

Federal health care reform could cost Louisiana taxpayers in excess of $6 billion over 10 years once implemented, Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Secretary Alan Levine announced today in response to a report by Kaiser’s Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured. The Kaiser report, intended to provide an estimate of costs for states, limited its analysis to the costs of the expansion of Medicaid, and did not provide an analysis of additional costs that may be imposed.
