The swim advisory issued for the water at Cypremort Point Beach in St. Mary Parish on July 15 has been lifted. The advisory was issued because high levels of potentially unsafe bacteria were found in the water. However, water samples tested during the past seven days show the water is now acceptable for swimming.
The Department of Health and Hospitals today confirmed two human cases of West Nile virus from Livingston Parish. These are the first cases of West Nile virus for the 2005 season.
Swimming advisories have been issued for the beach water at Hackberry, Rutherford and Martin beaches, as well as three sections of Holly Beach in Cameron Parish. June 27 is National HIV Testing Day, which is dedicated to encouraging people to find out their HIV status and helping those who are positive access treatment and reduce their risk of transmitting the virus to others. National HIV Testing Day also prevents new HIV infections by increasing education and awareness about the virus, and offering access to voluntary counseling and testing services.
