Baton Rouge – The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals – Tobacco Control Program is encouraging communities in rural Louisiana to apply for grants to help fight tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke.
Baton Rouge – As part of its ongoing effort to ensure optimal preparedness for a natural or man-made disaster, the Department of Health and Hospitals today held a symposium and plan review with employees and partners from throughout the state. Included in the review were federal partners from the United States Department of Health and Human Services.
Baton Rouge- In order to fine-tune their emergency response, Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals is holding nine statewide disaster preparedness seminars. At these events, DHH employees will learn more about the agency’s critical role in the event of a hurricane, disease epidemic or other health disaster.

New Orleans – The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals and its state and local partners will hold a news conference on Friday, Feb. 1 at 11 a.m. to announce the opening of a temporary urgent care clinic in New Orleans to provide medical support during Mardi Gras.
Baton Rouge – The number of adults and children in Louisiana who are uninsured has been steadily declining since 2005, according to results from this year’s Louisiana Health Insurance Survey.
Baton Rouge – January is the deadliest month for carbon monoxide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Although few people in Louisiana are killed by carbon monoxide each year, during cold weather, many people unknowingly set the stage for dangerous conditions that could lead to poisonous levels. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer because it cannot be seen or smelled. Very tiny amounts of carbon monoxide can be lethal.
A national health organization says Louisiana is better prepared for a health emergency than ever before. In its fifth annual report, “Trust for America’s Health” gives Louisiana an eight out of 10 overall for emergency preparedness. This is a significant improvement from last year’s score when the state only achieved six out of 10 standards for emergency readiness.
The Department of Health and Hospitals – Office of Public Health is now making the flu vaccine available to anyone, regardless of their likelihood for catching the flu this season.
