The results of a new door-to-door survey of people living in Orleans Parish show the current population to be 187,525 residents. The study, done with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Census Bureau, is the first of its kind since hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated the Gulf Coast in 2005. Jefferson Parish has 435,786 residents, Plaquemines Parish has 20,024 residents and St. Bernard Parish has 25,016 residents.
The Department of Health and Hospitals today confirms 12 new human cases of West Nile virus, giving Louisiana a total of 133 cases thus far in 2006. Of all cases reported, 67 are the more serious form of West Nile virus that infects the brain and spinal cord.
The Department of Health and Hospitals, Office of Public Health announces that Dr. Martha Whyte has returned as Regional Medical Director for OPH Region 7, which encompasses Bienville, Bossier, Caddo, Claiborne, De Soto, Natchitoches, Red River, Sabine and Webster parishes.
Effective Sept. 30, the NP Pedicon Kid Med South WIC Clinic, located at 9335 Burbank Dr. in Baton Rouge, will no longer provide WIC services, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women, and infants and children under five years old.
The swim advisory issued for the water at Cypremort Point on Friday, Sept. 22 has been lifted. The advisory was issued because high levels of potentially unsafe bacteria were found in the water. However, additional sampling during the past few days shows the water is now acceptable for swimming.
A swimming advisory has been issued for the beach water at Cypremort Point. This advisory is being issued because water samples collected at this location showed high levels of enteric bacteria, which comes from the intestinal tracts of humans and animals. Please note that this is NOT a closure of the beach or facilities at Cypremort Point. All areas remain open for boating and land-based activities.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention today released the National Immunization Survey results, which show Louisiana improved 11 places in the rankings for children who receive their required vaccines.
A new study by the Department of Health and Hospitals shows there is little evidence to support recent reports of increased death and suicide rates after Hurricane Katrina. Instead, the study shows there may now be slight increases in suicides, fewer homicides than expected and slightly higher death rates in hospitals and nursing homes than before last year’s storm.
Ten days after Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, the State of Louisiana established the Find Family National Call Center, which would later become the Louisiana Family Assistance Center.
For the next two days, nurses from around the area will practice fundamentals to care for Louisiana’s chronically ill residents in a disaster situation.
