  North Louisiana Woman Dies from Rare Ameba Infection

  The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals is warning residents about the dangers of the improper use of neti pots. The warning follows the state’s second death this year caused by Naegleria fowleri, the so-called brain-eating ameba. A 51-year-old DeSoto Parish woman died recently after using tap water in a neti pot to irrigate her sinuses and becoming infected with the deadly ameba. In June, a 20-year-old St. Bernard Parish man died under the same circumstances. Naegleria fowleri infects people by entering the body through the nose. A neti pot is commonly used to irrigate sinuses, and looks like a genie’s lamp.

  Please note that this list is accurate as of the day of publication as noted below. Anyone seeking a free ultrasound should verify with the facility whether they still perform free ultrasounds. If a patient voluntarily chooses to obtain a free ultrasound service, that ultrasound will likely be in addition to the ultrasound which is required by law for the purposes of determining viability and preserving the woman’s health, unless the free ultrasound is performed by the physician performing the abortion, the referring physician, or a qualified person working in conjunction with either physician.

  RFP for Public Water System Compliance Education and Training

  The purpose of this RFP is to solicit proposals from qualified proposers to provide education and training to the personnel of non-compliant public water systems (PWSs) to ensure the PWS can effectively supply and maintain safe drinking water to the public. Contractor duties will include training water system owners and operators who are in non-compliance with the required regulations governing their water system and ensuring that the PWS is aware of the necessary equipment and treatment techniques to comply with safe drinking water regulations. The contractor will provide training and education as to the proper operation and maintenance of the public water system facilities and equipment. A contract is necessary to provide the Safe Drinking Water Program Enforcement Section with the expertise to provide non-compliant water systems hands-on technical assistance resulting in water system compliance prior to legal enforcement action resulting in the reduction of water system notices of violation and administrative orders.

  Louisiana Part of Nationwide Recall of Prepackaged Sandwiches

  Landshire of St. Louis, MO is expanding its October 20 recall to include more than 17,000 cases of its Nike All-American and Nike Super Poor Boy sandwiches. The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals has identified that this product has been distributed in Louisiana. DHH sanitarians are working closely with the manufacturer to ensure the recalled product is removed from Louisiana store shelves, and sate public health officials are warning residents not to consume the recalled sandwiches. Landshire issued the voluntary recall after two samples from the company’s Caseyville, Il. plant tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

  The purpose of this RFP is to solicit proposals from qualified proposers that provide a DHH Licensed, (# AC10503, expires 11/30/2011), Shelter care Group Home In Region II with an array of services to include: 24 hour supervision with a 10 patient to 1 staff ratio from 5:00 PM – 8:00 AM and 20:1 from 8:00 AM- 5:00PM. Other services are community groups, independent living skills (meal preparation, shopping, household chores), crisis services, medication monitoring, and transportation to appointments, recreational outings and other social activities for male adults with severe and persistent mental illness.

  DHH Confirms Two New Cases of West Nile Virus

  The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals has confirmed two new human cases of West Nile Virus, bringing this year's total to 12. This is less than half of 2009's 29 total cases of West Nile virus, Louisiana's lowest year on record. Both new cases are from St. Tammany Parish. These cases are reported in DHH's weekly Louisiana Arbovirus Surveillance Summary, which can be found in the Surveillance Reports Section of the DHH website.
