  New Orleans Area Clinics Achieve National Recognition for Quality

  New Orleans– Clinics throughout the Greater New Orleans area have received recognition as Physician Practice Connections—Patient Centered Medical Homes (PPC-PCMH) by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). NCQA’s Physician Recognition Programs identify physicians who deliver care using standards firmly rooted in medical evidence. The 37 recognized clinics are under the management of 13 public and private non-profit organizations providing affordable primary and behavioral healthcare in Orleans, Jefferson, and St. Bernard Parishes.

  GIBSLAND–On Friday, Feb. 20, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals will provide meningitis vaccines at no cost for all middle and high school students at Gibsland-Coleman Complex School in Bienville Parish.

  Fish Consumption Advisories Issued for Louisiana Waterways

  BATON ROUGE – The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, or DHH, in conjunction with the Department of Environmental Quality and the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, is issuing advisories for eight state waterways where elevated levels of mercury have been detected in the local fish. These advisories recommend limiting the consumption of identified fish which may contain high levels of mercury.

  Oyster Transplant Permits Available

  Beginning Feb. 1, Louisiana oyster harvesters will have a two-week opportunity to move oysters from the public oyster seed grounds located in Lake Borgne and Mississippi Sound between the Rigolets and Half Moon (Grand) Island, and transplant them to private leases for later harvest. A boost to the local oyster industry, the transplant allows Louisiana oystermen to harvest oysters that would not have otherwise been available to them during the season.
