Baton Rouge --- The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, in conjunction with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Louisiana Rural Water Association, is offering free bacteriological testing (for total coliforms and E. coli) for citizens, in Southeast Louisiana in Region IX who have private drinking water wells and systems.
At this time, state officials, working in conjunction with coroners from local parishes have confirmed 646 deaths.
Baton Rouge – The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals has developed a management plan in anticipation of the hatching of mosquitoes and flies due to the massive flooding in the area. Mosquito control is needed to protect public health from nuisances and diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, as well as flies.
Baton Rouge – With the announcement that St. Bernard residents will be given the opportunity to return to their residences this weekend, Dr. Fred Cerise, Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, stresses that caution must be used.

Baton Rouge – State health officials have issued an update to conditions of water systems in Southeast Louisiana that were seriously impacted by Hurricane Katrina. Boil orders have been lifted for some parish water systems. The boil orders, which were issued after a loss of pressure occurred in those systems, have been lifted since testing showed the water does not contain unsafe levels of bacteria and is safe to drink and use.
Baton Rouge – Health care organizations providing medical care for Hurricane Katrina evacuees are eligible for pharmaceuticals and medical supplies through a new system established by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals to collect and distribute donations.

Baton Rouge – The Department of Health and Hospitals – Office of Public Health (DHH/OPH) has REOPENED some of the oyster harvest areas that were closed last Tuesday, August 30, 2005. Oyster harvesting can resume in the areas outlined below beginning at official sunrise, Friday, September 16, 2005. The beds were closed as a precautionary measure after Hurricane Katrina.
