Baton Rouge --- The Department of Health and Hospitals – Office of Public Health, through its Center for Health Statistics (CHS), has released the “Louisiana Hospital Inpatient Discharge Database (LAHIDD) Report.” This publication tracked hospital discharge trends in the state between 1998 and 2000 to discover reasons for hospital stays, identify at-risk populations and develop better disease surveillance.
NEW ORLEANS -- Seven weeks after the launch of a statewide secondhand smoke education and awareness campaign, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals’ Tobacco Control Program is taking its message to Louisiana’s newspaper readers through a print advertising campaign and renewing its commitment to listen to Louisiana residents about secondhand smoke issues.
Baton Rouge --- The Department of Health and Hospitals has detected five new human cases of West Nile virus, raising the 2003 total to 101 cases throughout Louisiana.
Baton Rouge --- Louisiana has received a $1 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to expand capabilities for tracking chronic diseases and environmental exposures. The grant will be paid out in installments over a three-year period and will allow Louisiana and the other areas receiving money to expand disease surveillance systems.
Baton Rouge — In an effort to emphasize the importance of primary and preventive care in Louisiana, Gov. M.J. "Mike" Foster has proclaimed the first week of November CommunityCARE and KIDMED week. The proclamation recognizes efforts the Department of Health and Hospitals has made to ensure primary care services for Medicaid clients and increase preventive health screening for children through these programs.
Baton Rouge --- The 2003 West Nile season still appears to be slowing, with only three new cases reported this week. The new cases were from Bossier, East Baton Rouge and Tangipahoa parishes.

Baton Rouge – The Department of Health and Hospitals has awarded grants to 15 health care providers throughout the state, giving them financial assistance to enhance or expand their community-based primary and preventive care services.
Baton Rouge --- Louisiana now has 84 cases of West Nile virus for the 2003 season. State health officials announced 10 new cases of the virus this week, with three parishes seeing the first human case of West Nile this year. However, since one case was removed from last week’s tally and another was reclassified, the case count only rose by nine, from 75 to 84 cases.
Baton Rouge --- While people who rely on public assistance usually seek help for physical ailments, their mental health needs can go unnoticed. Recent studies have shown that approximately 40 percent of people receiving public assistance are clinically depressed. Left untreated, depression can interfere with a person’s everyday health and transition back into society.
Baton Rouge --- East Baton Rouge, Livingston, St. Mary, Tangipahoa, Webster and West Carroll parishes all reported new human cases of West Nile this week, which brings the 2003 total to 75 human infections in 20 parishes statewide.
