Baton Rouge --- State health officials report eight new cases of West Nile virus, raising the year’s total to 67 cases. In addition, five cases of St. Louis encephalitis and one death associated with that virus have been reported from the Livingston and East Baton Rouge parishes area.

New Orleans — As Louisiana students return to classrooms this fall, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals’ Tobacco Control Program is launching an educational effort to teach parents, caregivers and others the importance of avoiding exposure to secondhand smoke.
Baton Rouge --- Additional West Nile cases from Caddo, East Baton Rouge, Orleans, Richland, St. Tammany and Tangipahoa parishes raise the state’s West Nile total to 60 human cases. No additional deaths associated with the virus have occurred. Caddo and St. Tammany parishes reported two new cases each in the updated case numbers, and the other four parishes each reported one new case.

According to a 2002 Chronic Disease Surveillance Report issued by the Department of Health and Hospitals --- Office of Public Health, more than 84 percent of Louisiana residents do not consume the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
Baton Rouge --- Most parents know backyard pools can be a drowning hazard, but they forget bathtubs, buckets, toilets, hot tubs and spas can be just as dangerous. Accidents involving these common household items cause the drowning deaths of approximately 115 children each year, in addition to the approximately 250 children per year who drown in household pools.
Baton Rouge – Two years ago today, America suffered an unprecedented terrorist attack. Since that assault by middle east extremists, much has been done to better prepare the country to defend itself, as well as increase our readiness should another threat become a reality.
Baton Rouge --- Public health officials today announce six more cases of West Nile virus, bringing the state’s total to 52 cases. The new cases were three people from Caddo Parish and one case each from Bossier, Lafourche and Orleans parishes. Orleans is the only parish that had not previously reported a human West Nile case this year.
