When you get an infection your body produces disease-fighting substances called antibodies.  These antibodies usually stay in your body even after the ilness has gone, and protect you from getting the same illness again.  Immunizations (also called shots or vaccines) can also produce immunity.  Vaccines are injected into the body to protect against disease.  Most shots need to be given several times to provide protection.

Children can get very dangerous diseases that can be prevented by shots.  Very young children are at the most risk, so you need to immunize your children early.  Your child should receive immunizations at birth, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 12 months and soon after the 4th birthday.

Shots for Tots is hosting an outreach clinic, on Saturday, September 18, 2010 where you can get your children immunized for just $10.00 per child  (up to three children, then free above that for siblings).  Please be sure to bring your child's immunization records, so the staff knows what immunizations are needed.  Children ages 0 - 18 years are eligible for this service.

A representative from Medicaid will be available at the Shots for Tots event at Opelousas General's 3rd Floor Auditorium from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm on Saturday, September 18, 2010 to distribute information and answer questions concerning LaCHIP and other Medicaid programs, as well as, take applications for anyone interested in applying.
