The event is aimed at: educating parents and caregivers on child safety initiatives, while also  (1) reducing the number of infant deaths in our region due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and (2) preventing infant deaths attributed to unsafe sleep environments. These deaths often occur while an infant is sleeping with others in an adult bed or on adult furniture.

Louisiana continues to have one of the highest rates of SIDS deaths in the country almost twice the national average. Accidental suffocation kills an average of 24 infants a year in Louisiana and more than 800 nationwide.

Our goal in staging the Keeping Our Babies Safe Community Baby Shower is to give new and expectant parents potentially lifesaving tips on how to reduce the risk of SIDS and other kinds of sleep-related deaths by using practical guidelines recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Also it is important that all babies are given a safe and healthy environment to grow up in. Knowing your agency provides resources for families we would like to invite you to be a part of this initiative.

This free event will promote safe-sleep messages through fun activities—including interactive presentations, displays, and demonstrations for mothers and fathers who attend. We encourage you to join us in our campaign to increase awareness about the risks of placing an infant in an unsafe sleep environment.

Representatives from Medicaid will be at Knight Hall on Saturday, October 30, 2010 from 10am to 2pm to distribute information and answer questions concerning LaMOMs, LaCHIP and other Medicaid Programs, as well as take applications for anyone who is interested in applying.
