State to focus on health coverage for children

Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco has declared August LaCHIP month to encourage families to start the new school year by seeking health coverage for their uninsured children.

LaCHIP is the Louisiana Children's Health Insurance Program. It provides no-cost health coverage to children from working families who do not have health insurance and are younger than 19. A family of four can earn up to $38,700 a year and still qualify for LaCHIP coverage for their children. The program covers visits to the doctor, dentist and hospital as well as prescriptions and immunizations.

"More than 10 percent of children in our state who qualify for LaCHIP are still uninsured," Department of Health Secretary Dr. Fred Cerise said. "It is key for the overall health of Louisiana that the families of these children know about the services they can get through LaCHIP." 

To this end, representatives of the LaCHIP program will be participating in events at stores, schools, churches and community centers across the state to answer questions about and help families sign up for no-cost health coverage from the state. They will also help families who already have children with LaCHIP complete renewal forms for the program.  The toll free LaCHIP hotline, 1-877-2LaCHIP (1-877-252-2447), will also have extended hours throughout the month of August with live assistance available from 7:30AM-7:00PM on weekdays and 10:00AM-2:00PM on Saturdays.

Children on LaCHIP and Medicaid must have their coverage renewed each year. Medicaid will send families renewal forms when it is time for their children's coverage to be renewed. Parents and caregivers can also call the LaCHIP hotline and use the automated telephone system to answer questions necessary to renew a child's coverage. Application and renewal forms can also be downloaded from http://www.lachip.org.
