STD/HIV/Hepatitis Program Regional Profiles, 2021 Update

This report was prepared for the Louisiana HIV/AIDS Program (HAP) of the Office of Public Health within the Department of Health and Hospitals. The purpose of this needs assessment is to gain understanding of the current care service needs of People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) throughout Louisiana and within each of the nine administrative regions. In particular, the assessment aims to provide an accurate estimate of the extent of PLWHA’s unmet primary care and HIV-related support service needs, their experiences in accessing those services, the perceived barriers to those services, and some insight into their reported knowledge of those services. Our aim in constructing this statewide assessment was to collect opinions, perceptions, and experiences from a group of people that is as representative of people living with HIV/AIDS in Louisiana as is possible.

Louisiana’s case rates of primary and secondary syphilis, congenital syphilis and gonorrhea improved from 2017 to 2018, showing the Louisiana Department of Health’s efforts toward STD prevention are making a positive impact.

The grant comes as part of the first wave of funding to support the federal government’s 10-year plan to end the HIV epidemic.

The Louisiana Department of Health today announced that fewer people have been diagnosed with an HIV infection in the past year than in any of the previous 10 years.

The screenings are for HIV, hepatitis C and syphilis. They are set for June 24-27, leading up to National HIV Testing Day.

This month, the Louisiana Department of Health’s Office of Public Health, Walgreens and other local health agencies will be holding 43 screening opportunities for sexually transmitted infections, or STI screenings.
