BATON ROUGE (July 8, 2019): The Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) is urging the people of Louisiana to monitor the forecast over the next several days due to possible tropical development in the Gulf of Mexico. According to the National Hurricane Center, a trough of low pressure located over central Georgia is forecast to move southward toward the northeastern Gulf of Mexico, where a broad area of low pressure is expected to form in a couple of days.
The Louisiana Department of Health today announced that fewer people have been diagnosed with an HIV infection in the past year than in any of the previous 10 years.
“This new model has the potential to save many lives and improve the health of our citizens. It is an important day for our state, for our partner Asegua Therapeutics, for providers, but most importantly for the patients and their families who will benefit from treatment,” said Governor Edwards.
An algal bloom is the rapid growth of algae on the surface of the water. The Department is advising people to avoid contact, including swimming, with blue-green algae as exposure can be harmful for some people.
The Louisiana Department of Health’s Office of Public Health has updated its disease reporting requirements to help the state tackle three diseases that cause significant illness, including death: HIV, syphilis and hepatitis C. This reporting change requires the reporting of all test results of these conditions.
With the number of reported measles cases reaching the highest point this century, officials with the Louisiana Department of Health are urging people to get vaccinated. The United States is currently experiencing its worst outbreak of measles since the disease was considered eliminated in 2000, and the worst in 25 years. So far, over 700 people in 22 states have contracted the illness. They were all unvaccinated.
