Baton Rouge --- The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals was notified today it is receiving a $15 million grant to provide incentives to try and lure primary care physicians and other health care professionals back to the New Orleans area.

NEW ORLEANS (February 6, 2007) – The results of the first post-Hurricane Rita household surveys of Calcasieu, Cameron and Vermilion Parishes have been released. Calcasieu Parish has an estimated population of 189,768 residents, up from 179,030 residents in the 2000 U.S. Census, while Cameron has an estimated population of 7,403, down from 9,991 in the 2000 Census. Vermilion Parish has an estimated population of 58,114, up from 53,040 in the 2000 Census.
January 12, New Orleans, LA – The estimated current population for St. Tammany is 220,656 residents, according to the first post-Katrina household survey of the area. This represents an increase of 31,734 people since the 2000 U.S. Census, which measured the area’s population at 188,922.
New Orleans – As part of the state’s initiative to prepare for an influenza pandemic, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Office of Public Health has scheduled a training exercise to help the parishes in New Orleans and the surrounding areas of the state prepare to respond for a future influenza pandemic. The parishes included in the training include Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines and St. Bernard.
Lafayette – The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Office of Public Health has scheduled a regional training exercise to help the parishes in the Acadiana region of the state prepare to respond for a future influenza outbreak. These parishes include Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, and Vermillion.

Registration is now open for the Lighten Up Louisiana statewide competition for 2007. The overwhelmingly successful program encourages Louisiana citizens to get healthy by focusing on making better food choices and increasing physical activity. This time around, both the adult and kids’ versions will run at the same time. In addition, individuals as well as teams can now join the competition.
