Baton Rouge – In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Department of Health and Hospitals—Office of Public Health’s Laboratory in New Orleans is closed indefinitely. Until further notice, all newborn screening (PKU) specimens should be sent to the OPH Laboratory in Shreveport.

Baton Rouge – State health officials have issued an update to conditions of water systems in Southeast Louisiana that were seriously impacted by Hurricane Katrina. Boil orders have been lifted for some parish water systems.

Baton Rouge – Following Hurricane Katrina and the mass evacuation of the Greater New Orleans area, many residents are displaced and cannot access necessary social services such as counseling, substance abuse treatment or therapeutic services for people with developmental disabilities. The Department of Health and Hospitals has teams in place to address these needs and connect people immediately to the necessary services.
