Baton Rouge – The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals has developed a management plan in anticipation of the hatching of mosquitoes and flies due to the massive flooding in the area. Mosquito control is needed to protect public health from nuisances and diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, as well as flies.

Baton Rouge – The Louisiana WIC Program wishes to inform recipients that Texas food instruments issued to Louisiana hurricane evacuees or to Texas residents who have evacuated to Louisiana cannot be redeemed at Louisiana WIC vendors.
Baton Rouge – State health officials have issued an update to conditions of water systems in Louisiana that were seriously impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Boil orders have been lifted for some parish water systems. The boil orders, which were issued after a loss of pressure occurred in those systems, have been lifted since testing showed the water does not contain unsafe levels of bacteria and is safe to drink and use.

Following Hurricane Rita, the health units in Acadia and Vermilion parishes are temporarily closed. However, health units in the following parishes remain open:
Lafayette – The Department of Health and Hospitals has partnered with various medical organizations to staff a primary health care clinic in Lafayette to treat patients from Hurricanes Rita and Katrina. The clinic is located at the Lafayette Parish Health Unit, 220 West Willow Street, Building A, Lafayette; 337-262-5616.
Baton Rouge – State health officials are advising residents in all areas impacted by Hurricane Rita to boil or disinfect water before drinking. This advisory is for communities in which water systems lost pressure due to electrical power outages.
Baton Rouge – Because of the continual threat of tropical storms and hurricanes, many Louisiana residents purchase individual, gas-powered generators to provide power to their homes in the event of an outage. However, every year, many die or are hospitalized because of improper and unsafe usage of generators.
Baton Rouge --- Due to potential weather threats from Hurricane Rita, the state Department of Health and Hospitals wishes to remind citizens that if they experience water pressure loss during the storm, their system is considered to be on a blanket boil advisory until health officials notify the public that the water is safe for consumption.
Baton Rouge –The Department of Health and Hospitals has closed all of the oyster beds that reopened last Friday in Terrebonne Parish and all areas west to the Louisiana-Texas state line known as Shellfish Harvest Areas 15 thru 28. This closure is being taken as a precautionary measure because of Hurricane Rita.
Baton Rouge --- The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, in conjunction with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Louisiana Rural Water Association, is offering free bacteriological testing (for total coliforms and E. coli) for citizens, in Southeast Louisiana in Region IX who have private drinking water wells and systems.
