Baton Rouge – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today announced a change in gonorrhea treatment guidelines. According to the CDC, gonorrhea treatments should now be limited to a single class of antibiotics.
Baton Rouge – The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals is issuing a warning to medical providers throughout Louisiana about a false advisory in circulation which states health care providers are required by new state and federal regulations to post hand-washing posters. The advisory claims the Louisiana Healthcare Compliance Center issued the policy that requires these posters be displayed “at all handwashing facilities.”

Lake Charles –Officials with the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals announced late today the signing of an order to close two molluscan shellfish growing areas in Calcasieu estuary. The closure is for Area 29 (Lower Calcasieu Lake) and Area 30 (West Cove).

Baton Rouge --- The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals was notified today it is receiving a $15 million grant to provide incentives to try and lure primary care physicians and other health care professionals back to the New Orleans area.
Baton Rouge – Over the past week, the Department of Health and Hospitals issued checks to 31 more hospitals that cared for uninsured patients last year in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. (Earlier payments were made to East and West Jefferson hospitals.) With these latest payments, DHH met its mid-February goal of issuing extra funding to hospitals that qualified because they treated higher numbers of uninsured patients.
Baton Rouge – The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are investigating an outbreak of an illness caused by Salmonella.
Lafayette – The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Office of Public Health has scheduled a regional training exercise to help the parishes in the Acadiana region of the state prepare to respond for a future influenza outbreak. These parishes include Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, and Vermillion.
Baton Rouge – As part of the state’s initiative to prepare for an influenza pandemic, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Office of Public Health has scheduled a training exercise to help the parishes in Baton Rouge and surrounding areas prepare to respond for a future influenza pandemic. These parishes include Ascension, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Pointe Coupee, West Baton Rouge and West Feliciana.
