More Pandemic Flu Training Scheduled for Southwest Louisiana

Baton Rouge --- The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals was notified today it is receiving a $15 million grant to provide incentives to try and lure primary care physicians and other health care professionals back to the New Orleans area.
Baton Rouge – Over the past week, the Department of Health and Hospitals issued checks to 31 more hospitals that cared for uninsured patients last year in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. (Earlier payments were made to East and West Jefferson hospitals.) With these latest payments, DHH met its mid-February goal of issuing extra funding to hospitals that qualified because they treated higher numbers of uninsured patients.
Baton Rouge – The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are investigating an outbreak of an illness caused by Salmonella.
Lafayette – The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Office of Public Health has scheduled a regional training exercise to help the parishes in the Acadiana region of the state prepare to respond for a future influenza outbreak. These parishes include Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, and Vermillion.

These parishes include Ascension, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Pointe Coupee, West Baton Rouge and West Feliciana.

Baton Rouge --- Registration is now open for the Lighten Up Louisiana statewide competition for 2007. The overwhelmingly successful program encourages Louisiana citizens to get healthy by focusing on making better food choices and increasing physical activity. This time around, both the adult and kids’ versions will run at the same time. In addition, individuals as well as teams can now join the competition.

These parishes include Assumption, Lafourche, St. Charles, St. James, St. John, St. Mary, and Terrebonne.
