First case of West Nile in Louisiana confirmed for 2010
The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals has reported the state’s first case of West Nile virus in a human in 2010. The case was confirmed July 14 in East Baton Rouge Parish.

Two hundred and twenty-seven oil spill exposure-related cases have been reported to the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) to date, according to its sixth surveillance report released today. One hundred and ninety-three of those cases involved workers on oil rigs or workers involved in the oil spill clean-up efforts, while 34 were reported by the general public.

But while Republicans and Democrats clubbed each other daffy with public options, back-room deals, death panels and coverage mandates, Louisiana public health officials pushed ahead quietly with their own plans for reforming health care — or at least that portion of the state's health care provided by Medicaid. That portion turns out to be regrettably large.
