  DHH, LDWF, DEQ Secretaries and Agriculture Commissioner Request Federal Government Force BP America to Approve Louisiana's Seafood Safety Plan

  In a letter to federal officials Wednesday, Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Secretary Alan Levine, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Secretary Robert Barham, Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality Secretary Peggy Hatch and Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain requested that the federal government force BP to approve Louisiana's seafood safety plan.

  Louisiana LDH Releases Oil Spill-Related Exposure Information

  One hundred and nine cases of oil spill exposure-related cases have been reported to the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) to date, according to its second surveillance report released today. Seventy-four of those cases involved workers on oil rigs or workers involved in the oil spill clean-up efforts, while 35 were reported by the general public.

  Louisiana LDH Releases Oil Spill-Related Exposure Information

  Seventy-one cases of oil spill-related illnesses have been reported to the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) to date, according to a report released today. Fifty of those involved workers on oil rigs or those involved in the oil spill clean-up efforts, while 21 illnesses were reported by the general public.

  DHH, DEQ Ask OSHA to Investigate Oil Spill Worker Conditions, Safety

  The secretaries of the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and the Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) sent a letter to Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Assistant Secretary of Labor David Michaels asking the agency to conduct a full investigation of oil spill worker conditions and safety.

  DHH Reopens Oyster Harvesting Areas West of the Mississippi

  The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals announced today that it will reopen oyster harvesting area 9, 19, 21, 22 and 23 to give harvesters as much time as possible to harvest their product before any potential impact from the BP oil spill in the Gulf.

  DHH secretary, New Orleans mayor stress importance of federal funding for primary care clinics

  Louisiana Department of Health Hospitals Secretary Alan Levine and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu this week submitted a letter and proposal to U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Director Cindy Mann highlighting the importance of Primary Care Access and Stabilization Grant clinics in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard and Plaquemines Parishes and offering funding solutions to keep the clinics open. Federal funding for the clinics currently ends on Sept. 30.

  BATON ROUGE—Federal health care reform could cost Louisiana taxpayers in excess of $6 billion over 10 years once implemented, Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Secretary Alan Levine announced today in response to a report by Kaiser’s Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured. The Kaiser report, intended to provide an estimate of costs for states, limited its analysis to the costs of the expansion of Medicaid, and did not provide an analysis of additional costs that may be imposed.
