  DHH Secretary Releases State Data on Costs of Federal Health Reform in Response to National Report Issued Today

  BATON ROUGE—Federal health care reform could cost Louisiana taxpayers in excess of $6 billion over 10 years once implemented, Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Secretary Alan Levine announced today in response to a report by Kaiser’s Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured. The Kaiser report, intended to provide an estimate of costs for states, limited its analysis to the costs of the expansion of Medicaid, and did not provide an analysis of additional costs that may be imposed.

  The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals is reminding oil spill response workers and volunteers to seek appropriate training and to be cautious when encountering wildlife while assisting the cleanup of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

  The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals announced today that it will reopen oyster harvesting Area 28 to give harvesters as much time as possible to harvest their product before any potential impact from the BP oil spill in the Gulf.

  In Precautionary Move, LDH Closes Additional Oyster Harvesting Areas West of the Mississippi Due to Oil Spill

  Confirmed reports of oil further west along the Louisiana coast are forcing the immediate closure of more oyster harvest areas. The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals announced today the closure of additional oyster harvesting bed areas west of the Mississippi, including areas 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 17, 19, 21, 22 and 23 as a precautionary response to the BP oil spill in the Gulf. These closures take effect immediately.

  DHH Prepares for Hurricane Season with Hospital Evacuation Exercise

  Military personnel from across the country joined the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals to test the state’s multiple-hospital evacuation plan today at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport. Mock patients were loaded into C-130 aircraft, which had been retrofitted for use as a flying medical facility, as part of the exercise for the Medical Institution Evacuation Plan (MIEP).

  BATON ROUGE— As hurricane season approaches, state, federal and local agencies are working together to test the state’s Medical Institution Evacuation Plan (MIEP). DHH Secretary Alan Levine will hold a news conference on Thursday prior to the exercise at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport to discuss the state’s preparedness and the partnerships critical to getting Louisiana’s patients out of the path of an impending hurricane.
