  News Conference to Kickoff LaCHIP Outreach Blitz

  New Orleans – The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, in partnership with Agenda for Children and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Cover the Uninsured Week campaign, will hold a news conference on April 17 at 10 a.m. to announce the beginning of a week-long effort to enroll New Orleans area children in available health coverage programs. The event will be hosted at the Children’s Defense Fund Headquarters at 1452 N. Broad St. in New Orleans, La.

  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today announced a change in gonorrhea treatment guidelines. According to the CDC, gonorrhea treatments should now be limited to a single class of antibiotics.

  DHH Issues Warning about Hand-Washing Sign Scam

  Baton Rouge – The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals is issuing a warning to medical providers throughout Louisiana about a false advisory in circulation which states health care providers are required by new state and federal regulations to post hand-washing posters. The advisory claims the Louisiana Healthcare Compliance Center issued the policy that requires these posters be displayed “at all handwashing facilities.”

  State Health Insurance Progams Get Higher Income Limits

  Baton Rouge – More Louisiana children will be eligible for the Louisiana Children’s Health Insurance Program (LaCHIP) because of the annual increase in the Federal Poverty Level effective this month. This increase allows working families to earn more income and still qualify for LaCHIP, which provides no-cost health coverage for uninsured children younger than age 19.

  More New Orleans Area Health Providers Eligible for Incentives

  Baton Rouge --- The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals has issued changes to the eligibility requirements for the Greater New Orleans Health Service Corps. The program is designed to lure health care professionals back to the New Orleans area by providing up to $110,000 to those who agree to work in the parishes of Orleans, Jefferson, Plaquemines and St. Bernard for three years.

  First Responders to Learn from 9/11 Experts

  Baton Rouge – Louisiana Spirit, a program through the Department of Health and Hospitals – Office of Mental Health, is hosting its Peer Professional Development training for first responder teams from around the state. The seminar will be held from Wednesday, March 28 through Friday, March 30 at the Holiday Inn South on Airline Hwy and I-12 in Baton Rouge.

  Oyster Harvesting Areas in Southwest Louisiana Closed

  Lake Charles –Officials with the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals announced late today the signing of an order to close two molluscan shellfish growing areas in Calcasieu estuary. The closure is for Area 29 (Lower Calcasieu Lake) and Area 30 (West Cove).

  Baton Rouge – State health officials have been unable to determine the cause of the recent outbreak of a stomach illness that affected about 200 students earlier this month at Livonia High School in Pointe Coupee Parish.

  Louisiana in Group to Test Health Care Return on Investment Potential

  Baton Rouge – Louisiana has been chosen as one of eight states to participate in a new initiative designed to increase the value of dollars spent on health care. The initiative, called the Return on Investment Purchasing Institute, will take place over a 12-month period and will measure the state’s ability to return a profit on investments in quality improvement in the Medicaid program.
