Health officials with the Department of Agriculture and Forestry’s Office of Animal Health Services State Veterinarian’s Office have detected an outbreak of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) among horses in portions of DeSoto and Caddo parishes.
Baton Rouge --- Sen. Jay Dardenne announced today the legislative delegation from the Baton Rouge region has chosen its health care consortium members. Fifty members have been chosen for this group, which services a seven-parish region (East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, West Feliciana, Pointe Coupee, Iberville and Ascension parishes).

Sen. Bob Kostelka announced today the Northeast Legislative Delegation has chosen its consortium members. Forty-five members have been chosen for this group, which services a 12-parish region (Caldwell, Union, Madison, Tensas, Franklin, Jackson, Morehouse, West Carroll, East Carroll, Lincoln, Ouachita and Richland) in northeast Louisiana.
Nearly every two hours, another youth in this country dies from suicide. And for every completed suicide, there are another 100 to 200 non-fatal attempts. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among adolescents in Louisiana. Most startling is the fact that more people kill themselves than are killed by others.
The Department of Health and Hospitals has detected 15 more cases of West Nile virus, bringing the total number of cases in Louisiana to 55. Nine of the new cases were from the Caddo/Bossier parishes area, which had the majority of cases during last year’s outbreak.

Joe McPherson announced today the central legislative delegation has chosen its consortium members and the first meeting of the Central Louisiana Health Care Consortium (Region VI) will convene on Tuesday, Sept. 21. Forty-eight members have been chosen for this consortium, which services a eight-parish region (Vernon, Rapides, Winn, Grant, Avoyelles, LaSalle, Catahoula, and Concordia).
Senator Ben Nevers announced today the Region 9 legislative delegation has chosen its consortium members. The first meeting of this group, the Region 9 Louisiana Health Care Consortium, will be Monday, September 20. Thirty members have been chosen for this consortium, which services a five-parish region (St. Helena, Livingston, Tangipahoa, Washington and St. Tammany).

Evacuation shelters for people with special medical conditions only will be opened in three communities in Louisiana. These are shelters of last resort and are not for the general public.
Due to local evacuation orders, the New Orleans Regional Office of Public Health has closed. During this time the office is unable to accept phone calls. Health officials are in the process of establishing a new number for the area. During this time, people in this area who are in need of public health services should contact the Baton Rouge, Lafayette or Alexandria regional public health offices.
