  Supplement Educates Physicians about Obesity in Louisiana

  Obesity has emerged as a top health threat for the United States and for Louisiana. The Louisiana Council on Obesity Prevention and Management, along with the Department of Health and Hospitals and other education and health professional organizations, has created a supplement to the Journal of the Louisiana State Medical Society. The supplement will be available to all members in early January. It will provide continuing education credits for Louisiana Medical Society members and appeal to all health care providers as front-line fighters in the state’s battle against obesity.

  Oyster Transplant Permits Available

  Under an oyster relaying program, Louisiana oyster harvesters can now be permitted to move oysters from the public oyster seed grounds located southwest of Point Au Fer, Atchafalaya Bay and transplant them to their private leases for later harvest. This program is part of an initiative by both the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals and the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

  Critical Access Hospitals Receive Technology Grant

  The Louisiana Rural Health Information Technology Partnership received $1.1 million grant from the Department of Health and Human Services’ Agency for Health Care Research and Quality. The grant award will be used to increase technology for critical access hospitals and providers.

  Intensive Health Insurance Outreach Program to begin in Central Louisiana

  The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Medicaid Program, in conjunction with Louisiana Covering Kids & Families, has begun a targeted two-year outreach project designed to reduce the number of uninsured children in the central Louisiana area.

  Getting a birth certificate or death record is now easier than ever thanks to a new online service recently started by the Department of Health and Hospitals’ Vital Records Registry.

  Louisiana Improves Its Ranking Among Key Indicators for States’ Bioterrorism Preparedness

  Louisiana is one of only six states to achieve the highest preparedness status from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in demonstrating that health care workers are prepared to distribute vaccines and antidotes in the event of an emergency.

  Louisiana Seeks Federal OK to Join Medicaid Pharmaceutical Purchasing Pool

  The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals announced today it has filed a request with the federal Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services to participate in a multi-state Medicaid drug purchasing pool.

  Gov. Blanco Convenes Third Health Care Reform Meeting

  Providing care to the uninsured in Louisiana will be the main topic of discussion at the third quarterly meeting of the Governor’s Health Care Reform Panel. The meeting will take place on Thursday, Dec. 16 at the New Orleans Marriott Hotel, 555 Canal St., New Orleans.

  Acadiana Area Health Care Consortium to Meet Wednesday

  The local group working to reform health care in the Acadiana area will hold its second meeting Wednesday, December 8. Warren Hebert, chairman of the Region 4 Health Care Consortium, said the focus of the meeting is to divide the group into several working subcommittees and to conduct strategic planning.

  Health Department Receives Grant to Monitor Hazardous Substances Emergency Events

  The Department of Health and Hospitals, Office of Public Health received funding to continue the work of an established surveillance system for responding to emergency events involving hazardous substances. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry awarded the cooperative agreement.

  Health Department Detects Seven New West Nile Cases

  The Department of Health and Hospitals has detected seven more cases of West Nile virus, bringing the total number of cases in Louisiana to 108 for 2004. (Last year, as of Dec. 16, there were reports of 117 WNV cases.)
