BATON ROUGE, - Recovered Bodies – At this time, state officials, working in conjunction with coroners from local parishes, have recovered 1,100 bodies. This is an increase from 1,096 recovered bodies reported on Dec. 21, 2005.
Victim Identification Center (Carville) Totals:
907 – Total bodies examined at the morgue
601 – Released to Families
143 – Ready to be released; attempting to locate family members
1 – Identified; not ready for release
162 – Identity unknown (decreased from 174 on 12/21/2005.)
Released Bodies – On Dec. 21, LDH reported 561 bodies had been released to families. Today, that number has been updated to 601 released bodies
578 – Storm-related deaths (see attachment.)
23 – Medical examiner cases not storm-related
Demographic Breakdown of the 578 Storm-Related Deaths:
Race: African-American - 292 bodies (50% of total); Asian-Pacific – 3 (1%); Caucasian – 266 bodies (46%); Hispanic – 14 (2%); Native American – 2 (<1%); Other – 1 (< 1%.)
Gender: 292 males (51%), 286 females (49%).
Parish of Residence: Jefferson – 27, Orleans – 431, Plaquemines – 3, St. Bernard – 107, St. Tammany – 2, Washington – 1, unknown – 3, out of state – 2, St. John – 1, East Baton Rouge – 1.
